PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) helps children to build the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to make the most out of life's opportunities, and to manage life's challenges. Our PSHE curriculum at Sudenham has a positive impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. It aims to develop skills and attribute, including resilience, self-esteem, risk management, team-working and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing (physical and mental); relationships; and being a citizen within the wider world. These key themes are integrated throughout our curriculum, and are built upon, year on year. The comprehensive relationship education our pupils receive helps them to develop their emotional vocabulary and emotional literacy, which enables them to talk about and manage their feelings. The Protective Behaviours curriculum supports childrn in building their personal support networks and gives them the confidence to ask for help if they feel unsafe.

Our PSHE curriculum prepares children for their adult lives and teaches them how to engage in society; to value differences and diversity; and to be respectful and responsible citizens. It also deepens children's understanding of fundamental British Values. It removes barriers to learning and, therefore, has a positive impact on children's personal development; behaviour and attitudes; and their progress across the curriculum. 

Our PSHE curriculum is underpinned by wider provision, including ourNurture provision; School Counsellor; Drawing and Talking; Lego Brick Clubs  Mental Health First Aiders; and Emotion Coaching pedagogies.

Protective Behaviours - The Taking Care Project

"Protective Behaviours is a practical, down-to-earth approach to personal safety. It is a process that encourages self-empowerment and brings with it the skills to raise self-esteem and to help avoid being victimised. This is achieved by helping individuals to recognise and trust their intuitive feelings (Early Warning Signs) and to develop strategies for self-protection. The Protective Behaviors process encourages an adventurous approach to life that satisfies the need for fun and excitement, without violence and fear."

At Lighthorne Heath Primary School, we are committed to ensuring children feel safe. One of the ways in which we do this is through delivery of the Protective Behaviours curriculum, which supports children in understanding personal safety, and builds their self-esteem, confidence and resilience.

Protected Characteristics

 

Protected characteristics are taught to children through our P.S.H.E. curriculum; through the UNICEF assemblies and lessons relating to the CRC; through our promotion of British Values; and through the ‘No Outsiders’ curriculum and resources.

'No Outsiders' is an ethos, which welcomes and values diversity. At Sydenham Primary School, we use picture books recommended by No Outsiders and assembly resources as part of our PSHE curriculum to promote inclusivity and commmunity cohsion; and to prepare children for life in Modern Britain as global citizens.
